Hiking Tours in Romania: 3 Days Guided Hiking Tours in the Fagaras & Piatra Craiului Mountains: Balea Lake, Transfagarasan Road, Magura & Pestera Villages, 15-17 Sept 2014.

15th October
We began our three day trip at Balea Lake beside the Transfagarasan Highway. Iulian Panescu led Nik and myself up on the ridge and on to Vanatarea lui Buteanu peak (2507m). It was a fine scramble along the ridge with dramatic clouds blowing from one side to the other with six chamois eating amongst the rocks in the distance. We then descended down to a lake and up to  Iezerul Caprei peak  at 2417m before returning to Balea Lake. A quick drive through the tunnel took us to the Southern Mountain Rescue Centre where we stayed the night.

16th October
As soon as we were awake, Iulian consulted the latest weather forecast that unfortunately predicted heavy rain, thunder and lightening. Therefore, we took a somewhat sheltered hike starting at Izvorul Caprei and then walked up to the Portita Arpasului Refuge and then returned. There were great views from the refuge. We then drove to Parcul National Park at Zarnesti and slept overnight at a pension.

17th October
We walked up the impressive limestone gorge of Prapastiile Zarnestiului to a big glade beneath the Piatra Craiului ridge. All very impressive. We made our way down via farmland and a village. In the gorge we came close to an impressive looking eagle owl.
A very pleasant three days walking - thanks Iulian!
